Deyoung Home Setup

15 posts in this topic

I have been ignoring my stereo needs ever since we moved into the new house. I have two rooms I would like setup: one is the main TV room aka living room where my family and I watch "normal tv"; the other is a complete blank room that I would like to create into a HT room.

I would like to work on the living room first.

This setup I would like simple, maybe a 2.1 or 3.1 setup? The only product I have commited to this room is a MJ-18. Everything else I have yet to purchase. Budget is flexible but I would like to stick to under $1000. The room is 15x20 and the TV is located above a small fireplace which is on the short wall. I use a PS3 for blu-ray movies and for streaming netflix and amazon. Cable is HD but we may switch to direcTV soon.

I am having a hard time trying to figure out what other information to provide. If you guys need more information let me know. Thank you for all your help.

Maybe start with the TV room. Are there space limitations? Are you building the enclosures/crossovers etc.?

Forgot to add that I will be building the enclosures and crossovers if need be. Space limitations? Not really, although something ginormous is out of the question.

Since I know that MJ quite well, ;) my original plans were a simple DIY pair of MTM towers. That room being not too large over all, it would not take much to fill it with great sound.

This looks to be a sweet value: http://www.parts-exp...tnumber=300-704

What Aaron said. I love Pardigm speakers so you might not like my direction. I posted that up for ideas because I am not the best diyer.

Thanks for the help guys.

Neal, your paradigm speakers look very nice. Just a little bit more than what I want to spend for this room :P.

I was looking at the overnight sensation build on parts express. I probably would want to do a left, right, and center channel for a nice 3.1 setup

thoughts?

Using that MTM set up would give you a lot of money left over for the sub......

Does your 1000 include cost of a receiver?

If so then the 3 MTM might be a good plan. If not, I would seriously consider a pair of really good towers.

Usually 2 fantastic towers will trump a 3 way. Especially in a living room/ not dedicated room.

I already have a MJ-18 that I will be using for subwoofer duty. The $1000 does include reciever but my budget can stretch if I need it to.

What towers would you recommend?

I decided to come over here to respond and mainly to get the rest of the information about the setup. I think it would be beneficial to get the exact price you have for the towers first before recommending a set. Without knowing the price you spend on a receiver it would be hard to recommend a tower since a receiver can be new or used for <200 or >1000.

Of the recommendations so far the overnight sensations will probably leave you wanting something more once you are done. Zaph has a lot of great designs for all price points, so I'm sure you could find one to fit what you are wanting..

If you want to look through a lot of designs to decide which may be more suited for you, here is a page that has a lot of different links for many DIY designers.

I have a budy who is building the single Driver Overnite Sensations as we speak. Everything that is in the Kit seems pretty good. I'll let you know how they sound when I get a chance to hear them. What are you planning on using for amplification on the subwoofer?

What features are you looking for in an AVR?

Excited to see a built here.

Thank you, budget does include receiver but as stated the budget can stretch.

My questions from the hop could be answered here :)

I'll have to find them Sean. :(

This room needs to be fairly simple. The wife won't let it get out of hand, she said go crazy with the HT room. For the receiver, I dont really know? Something that is able to fit my speakers needs? I am not a fan of the surround sound, I would like to keep all the speakers in front of me. The small amount of testing I have done with the MJ18, 100wrms is going to be plenty for the room. I am going to buy a plate amplifier that I can install in the enclosure.
