Bib - Neod Vs Ferrite

4 posts in this topic

Hey everybody! It's been a while since I have been here and over at SSA. I'm liking the changes!

Alright, on to my question. Is there a distinct advantage to using a neodymium speaker when a nearly identical ferrite speaker is also available? Ruling out cost and weight, of course. I want to make another set of BIBs but with 5" speakers. (I just made a set using Tang Band W3-1053SC's and I love them).

I am looking at using either of these speakers:

The speakers have an identical line length and will use very similar cabinets so where is the advantage? I have never listened to or used speakers that use NeoD magnets so I am without a reference to fall back on but from what I have researched there is no sound quality difference.

If anybody can help me out with this, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Here is a crappy Droid pic of the BIB setup I just made:

Oh those are cute! haha Did you do any stuffing?

Those 2 speakers look really really close as far as specs go. If I understand/remember correctly, neos yield higher BL with less material=lighter speaker/ higher cost.

I'd go with the cheaper ones seeing that they are so close though.

I still have some cheap Daytons I need to build some Bibs for. I will have to to that soon seeing that I have extra free time.

Haha I was thinking they would sound cute but it is really amazing how big they sound. Right now they do not have stuffing but I do plan on experimenting with some stuffing to see how the sound changes.

I'm thinking the same about going the with the cheaper speakers. That is, unless I can find some compelling reason to go with the Neo's instead.

You should build some Bibs for those Daytons before I come back to Minny.
