Hey guys,

Just trying to get some opinions on the layout of my surround sound.

I will be building a new house soon and have the option of prewiring 4 speakers locations in the house. Just wondering where you guys think I should put the speaker wire.

I get 4 speaker locations with an upgrade on the house so i can go 5.1 easy or I can go 7.1 and build 2 towers for the Front R and L.

Here is the layout of the house.

Negotiate to pull your own wires on top. They rape you and you need more. :)

What room, what location, what goals...

x2 I'd rather climb through an attic for a couple hours or run wiring through a basement than pay someone.

One other thing. You sure you want to build a house right now?? IMO there are so many sweet buys right now that financially it is an "interesting" decision. I realize that is off topic, but you don't need to get locked into something and be upside down at your age.

Your bulding a house!

What? Where? Why didn't you tell me???

8 - 18's IB!!!!

Use the 2nd bedroom closet for the enclosure. I would get the low down from Lord Baccus on SSA. He is pretty much knows everything about this stuff.

Well here in south texas we really dont have basements...

I'm just looking to do surround sound in the living room.

I'm getting rg-6 and cat 5 in all bedrooms.

I know the new house thing isn't to smart of a decision but I know with this house I will be happy with everything inside it.

Mk, going to be right down the street from you on needlepoint.

Another note.

Ceilings will be 9ft.

Thinking I could possible run wires into each bedroom to deliver music to the rooms. I can do that on my own.

How are you planning on orientating your living room? As in where are you planning on having your TV?

It's official. Signed on the house on friday.

Also told them to take the pre-wire our of the contract. Figured me and MK could do it.

but, in the contract they state that you can't do any work on the house while it's in construction. Still thinking i could get in and do it one weekend. Or i just might talk to the electrician doin the work and be like hey put this wire here and stuff.

Also i will get a sketch of the living room put together at work on monday.

Oh hell's yeah!!!

Dude that's totally crazy. I can't believe you'll be living down the street from my home. We could easily sneak in one night after dark and throw it down with a couple 6 packs!

You do realize this means you will actually have to build/buy a real surround sound setup.

Very true my friend lol

Don't know how soon I will be able to afford a surround sound but at least I will have the wires in place :)

Here is what i'm thinking the living room will look like. Also thinking about putting one speaker in each room either ceiling mount or hang from ceiling or something. Where would you place them in the rooms?

I think the room wiring placement really just depend on what you plan to do with each individual one

True, that is what I was going to try to get around. Try to get in after the city inspector comes and inspects the wiring of the house.

I plan on having 2 tower speakers up front with center channel, those dont have to be in wall. So that would leave me placing either 2 or 4 speakers in the room depending on if I go 5.1 or 7.1

Might as well just go 7.1, especially if you can get in before the drywall goes up.

Wire and wall plates can't be that expensive.

True

As Sean mentioned, Mono price is very reasonable!

What can the home builder do if they have a problem with the speaker wire? just wondering

That I don't know. What kind of problems do you anticipate that they could have with the wiring?

I can't imagine that they would have any problems with the wire itself. The only restriction as far as wire type depends if the cavity is an air exchange of some sort. If the cavity is a exchange, by code you need plenum wiring. I think if you install and staple wiring down, you would be good.

The reason I hate surround sound is that it is so awkward in most homes. I'm not sure if you are against speakers on stands, but an idea to look at could be running speaker wire to a big plate in the wall on the top right corner of the couch and then running a short run to your rear left and a longer one under the couch to your rear right. This also could be nice because you could run some other possibly needed wire over there. You might could use an HDMI to hook up your phone to the TV at some point to show someone something or a usb wire, etc...

To make it 7.1 you could put a speaker up high on the far left and above the couch against the wall.

For clarity. 7.1 in red
