I bought a computer from my friend a while back for super cheap. it isn't that great but had a lot more features then the one I got for free before that. The video card has a DVI out so I was using a DVI to VGA adapter until I bought a DVI to HDMI cable.

Unfortunately I have been having a problem with the TV recognizing the computer with the HDMI connection. The TV is a Sony LCD. Anyone else ever have these problems?

Did you try messing with the resolution settings in the control panel?

It says invalid format. I feel like it may be a lost cause for my TV. My computer claims 1080 when connected to the TV's VGA with a VGA to DVI converter at the video card.

Todd nailed it, resolution problem. TV's have limited choices to input.
