I want to make this clear before diving into a hell storm. I have much more knowledge in car audio than I do home audio, and I don't have that much knowledge about car audio. Regardless, I've been slowly and surely collecting as much home audio stuff as possible and not paying much which while doing so. Since I don't know too much yet, I don't spend that much. So what will follow, is the different equipment I've acquired over the past couple years that I think is worth looking at. Most of it is at least 10 years old. Some of it is 30 years old. I mostly listen to music by the way; not much of a movie fan.

Advice On The Right Receiver

I am renting a house. It has two ads bookshelf speakers in the great room (i know, not ideal, but they should be ok). I own a Pioneer Pro Plasma display (no speakers). I'd like to be able to hook the speakers up and use them for my tv audio, dvd audio, and stream music from my mac (itunes, spotify, etc.). I don't really have any need right now for surround sound, but would appreciate some pointers. I'm looking for the least expensive but reasonable solution since I don't own the house, just need something functional now. Don't feel like dropping 600 or so on a receiver, which the guys at best buy of course want me to do. Thoughts? Thanks.

Hello, New Member Checking In.

Wanted to say hello and possibly get a question answered.

I have a whole house audio system consisting of the following:

1 - 70" standard audio rack
- 3 Crown CTS600 amplifiers (2 bridged driving the 29av's)
- 1 Crown CT600 Amplifier (Bridged to subs)
- 1 Crown CT400 Amplifier
- 1 Crown CT200 Amplifier
- Various processors, BBE sonic maximizer 31 band eq, Monster power centers, wireless mic, ect
- JBL Soundzone source controller

This is powering an indoor/outdoor neighbor destroying fleet of JBL Control's
6 - JBL Control 29av's
12 - JBL Control 25av's
4 - JBL Control Now's
10 - JBL in ceiling speakers.

The sources for the above rack are a Harmon Kardon AVR3600/ Harmon Kardon Blueray (driving its own home theater with Energy speakers w/ipod dock. A dedicated media center CPU linked via WiFi to an HP Touchpad for wireless control of all controls. of music selection

Its a great system that will plaster the curtains to the windows but I want to add some finer zone by zone controls. Currently I use the JBL zone controller at the rack to select inputs (1 of 3) in each of the two different zones (inside and outside). Sitting by the pool punching up music on a touchpad over wifi that controls the house COOL....walking across the whole house and flipping a switch to change the source in one zone or adjust one zones volume....Buzzkiller.

Everything I see for room by room controlers have the pads that have built in amplifiers for plug and play jobs. Or they are NOT user programmable systems and are overkill for what I need. I don't want to break the bank (because according to my wife I already did) but I want to put, say 4 control pads around the house that will control individual volume/source for each zone with the amplification I already have.

Basically a box with 3 line level inputs and 4 line level outputs. This should connect via cat 5 to the 4 controllers. Each control pad would have an option to select from the three sources and a volume control. Anyone know if such an animal exists? Thanks!

Can Sansui S-820U Tower Speakers Be Adapted?

My gf had an old stereo set (turntable, cassette, cd, tuner) from the 80s or 90s that hasn't worked in quite a while. I'm no expert and have very little experience in home audio. I'll spare the gory details, but I fussed with it for about a couple of hours and could only get a hum from the system.

To the thrift store it went, but I kept the speakers. I did some research on them, apparently they're are from the 70s and not worth much, but they seem to be in good condition. My question is, can these speakers be adapted for use should we decide to get a new home audio system? The speaker connections are the kind that you shove a bare wire into a clip. I have a 78 rpm collection that I'm in the process of digitizing using a vintage 70s era Dual 1219 and a DAK setup. I like to listen to my 78s as I digitize them, so I'm wondering if I can hook it up to the Sansui speakers as well as my computer speakers. Thanks in advance for your help.

I was hoping someone would be able to help me on this.
Which Amplifier Is For Me?

I recently bought an MTX Audio ThunderPro2 speaker from Best Buy. My intention with this speaker was to be able to crank some loud music in my room. However, I recieved this speaker in the mail today and was very confused. Please take into consideration that I am a total ammature with speakers like this. Every speaker set I've ever owned came with an electrical cord in the back, plug into the wall and your set. So, I guess I expected the same from this speaker. Silly me. So here I am opening this speaker and I realize there is no cord. After several minutes of rifling through the cardboard and plastic, I came to a conclusion that there are NO CORDS! So i quickly jumped online with the customer service at MTX Audio and he brought to my attention that i need an amplifier. Bottom line, I have less than $100.00 to spend on this amplifier thing. My speaker has 400 watt peak power handling. Where can I get a good amplifier for under $100 to suit my needs?? Thanks to anyone who takes time to respond to this. To see more specs and get a better feel as to what I am dealing with, I will conclude this post with the link to my speaker. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/MTX+-+12%22+2-Way+Professional+Loudspeaker+(Each)+-+Black/Silver/8623563.p?id=1193451619263&skuId=8623563#tabbed-customerreviews

Help With Garage Stereo

Hey Guys, I have been trying to figure out how to put together a stereo for my garage, i have been doing a lot of researching but I'm just not getting very far so I figured I would ask the experts. I am planning on building something like this http://pjimmyaudio.weebly.com/ (I realize that thing is stupid over priced), I was planning on running car audio componets with a DC to AC converter, but I am thinking that would be a lot of unnecessary complication and probably wouldn't be very reliable. So now I am thinking of running a home stereo amp to power it instead, I am wanting to run an mp3 player so I wont need any kind of head unit or anything. I apologize in advance, I realize this is a really newb question, and has probably been covered a million times allready, but it's something I don't really understand and any help will be very appreciated. Thanks in advance

Sony And Samsung Shift To New Lcd Panel Business Alliance

Sony and Samsung Shift to New LCD Panel Business Alliance

•Samsung to acquire all of Sony's shares of S-LCD, making the joint venture its wholly-owned subsidiary
• Sony andSamsung enter into a strategic agreement for supply and purchase of LCD panels.

Tokyo, Japan - Sony Corporation ("Sony") andSamsung Electronics Co., Ltd. ("Samsung") today announced that the two companies have signed agreements to transition the current business relationship with respect to LCD panels.

Under the agreement, Samsung will acquire all of Sony's shares of S-LCD Corporation ("S-LCD"), the two companies' LCD panel manufacturing joint venture, making S-LCD a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung. In consideration for the share transfer, cash consideration of approximately KRW 1.08 trillion* will be paid to Sony by Samsung. Concurrently, the two companies have entered into a new strategic agreement for the supply and purchase of LCD panels with a goal of enhancing the competitiveness of both companies. The agreement also allows Sony and Samsung to continue cooperative engineering efforts focused on LCD panel technology.

For Sony, this transaction will enable it to monetize its shares in S-LCD and aims to secure a flexible and steady supply of LCD panels from Samsung, based on market prices and without the responsibility and costs of operating a manufacturing facility. With whole ownership of S-LCD, Samsung anticipates heightened flexibility, speed and efficiency in both panel production and business operations.

Established in April 2004, S-LCD has continued to deliver advanced and cost-competitiveLCD panels to both of its parent companies, contributing to the expansion of the respective parties' TV businesses, and the large-sized LCD TV market overall. However, LCD panel and TV market conditions have now changed. In order to respond to such challenging conditions and to strengthen their respective market competitiveness, the two companies have agreed to shift to a new LCD panel business alliance.

The share transfer and payment are targeted to close by the end of January 2012, subject to necessary approvals from regulatory authorities.

As a result of this transaction, a non-cash impairment loss of approximately JPY 66 billion is expected to be incurred by Sony in the third quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012, due to the reevaluation of its S-LCD shares. This loss includes an impact from the fluctuation of exchange rate. Despite this one-time loss, Sony estimates that the transaction will result in substantial savings on and after January 1, 2012 in respect of costs associated with its
procurement of LCD panels. The current estimate of the yearly savings in respect of such costs is approximately JPY 50 billion, compared to LCD panel procurement costs estimated for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012. Neither the one-time loss nor the estimated cost savings were included in Sony's forecast of consolidated financial results for the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2012, announced on November 2, 2011. Sony is currently reevaluating this forecast, taking into account this transaction and other factors that might affect its full year FY2011 consolidated financial results forecast.

Need Help With 6-8 Speaker Stereo Set Up For My Garage/deck

Hi I was hoping someone could guide me along with this, I don't know much about home audio. I would like to put 6 100 watt 8 inch Polk audio speakers in my drop ceiling in my garage and possibly 2 indoor/outdoor speakers on my rear deck run off of one receiver. I have an old stereo receiver and a newer Sony now but both only have outputs for 2 pairs of speakers (4 total) and I am unsure what equipment/changes I will have to make to power 6-8 speakers at one time. Best Buy suggested I look into Magnolia but I'm not sure what to look for exactly. I have seen that you can get 4 channel speaker selectors and it seems like that could work but I'm not sure if either of my current receivers could power that many speakers. I like my music at a good volume in the garage. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Need Help In Building 5.1 Surround Sound System!

Hey guys!

My house burned down in March of this year and it's finally being done rebuilding, we'll be moving in on the 21st, such a nice Christmas present! Anyways, so I need a 5.1 Surround sound system for my computer that has a good sound card with Digital Input.

This is my sound card : http://www.htomega.com/claro.html

So I've been looking and I don't want to pay for big brand names like Sony and Samsung, etc... I wanted to know your idea on more underground companies that produce as good, if not better products that these companies for a better price???

I can probably put something like 500 CAD$ Shipped or not is going to be determined depending on what you guys give me as ideas!

I currently have my eyes on this, is this any good?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JZSYZO/sr=8-69/qid=1323896407/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1323896407&sr=8-69&seller=

The main purpose of this system is Music (Heavy Metal / Death / Melodic type of music) and also 3D sound gaming.

Thank you for your insight and I hope you guys can provide me with enough information this week so I can maybe buy it on the weekend!

How To Mix Stereo And Surround

I'm a home audio newb so please excuse the ignorance. I have surround sound in my family room that's powered by a Pioneer vsx-520 reciever. In several other rooms in my house, I have stereo ceiling speakers. Since the Pioneer only had surround or line level outputs, I had my stereo speakers running through an old Onkyo stereo receiver which had it's input fed by a RCA line out from the Pioneer. This worked great because I could control the stereo speakers separately from the sound in the family room, but alas the Onkyo receiver has decided to retire and now my wife is left to wander the house without her music.

Other than buying a new stereo receiver to power the stereo lines independently, is there a clever way to use the line level outputs of the Pioneer to hook up the stereo speakers? I really don't want to spend the money for another receiver if I can avoid it with some home audio kung fu.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Sony Pictures Ceo: 3D Blu-Ray Movies Not Enough To Drive Household Adoption

7 Dec, 2011
By: Erik Gruenwedel

Hollywood’s marketing of 3D Blu-ray Disc movies won’t be enough to drive wider consumer adoption of 3D in the home, the head of Sony Pictures said.

Speaking Dec. 7 in an investor call with William Blair & Co.in Chicago, Michael Lynton, CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, said in-home adoption of 3D has been stymied by a dearth of compelling content beyond movies.

Lynton said greater availability of sports programming andvideo games in 3D would help jumpstart the format among consumers.

Indeed, with many games already available in 3D and early attempts to broadcast college football — in addition to the 2010 Beijing Olympics and The Masters — well-received, the belief is that expanded sports coverage could help 3D clear remaining hurdles into the home.

“It’s going to be based on what people want to watch,” Lynton said. “I don’t think that [3D] movies are going to drive [in-home adoption.]”

The CEO said consumers want to watch 3D movies in the home, but he believes that sports and video gaming will be more of a “pull” for consumers compared with movies. Adoption would be driven by "sports, nature programming like what Discovery is doing, and gaming," he said.

Sony, IMAX and Discovery Channel are partners in 3Dnet, the 3DTV channel carried by DirecTV and other multichannel video programing distributors.

“I think gaming will be a major driver,” Lynton said.

Sony is releasing seven theatrical movies in 3D in 2012, including reboots of the “Spider-Man” and “Men in Black” franchises. At the same time, domestic 3D viewership on new releases ranges from 40% to 60%, which is down from previous years, according to William Blair.

Meanwhile, international 3D theatrical attendance is up 60%, due in part to the novelty of the format.

“Part of the reason is that [3D movies] are newer [abroad] and you are continuing to see digital screens roll out more aggressively because there are fewer of them,” Lynton said, adding that Sony would only release titles in 3D if the format enhanced the quality of the movie.

Jvc Ships 4K Up-Converting Projectors

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 12/6/2011

Wayne, N.J. - Two new JVC Americas Procision 3D-enabled D-ILA home theater projectors that present 2D images in up to 4K resolution are now shipping to dealers along with a 3D 1080p model, the company said Tuesday.

Similar Reference Series versions offered through JVC's Professional systems group are also available now, the company said.

All models include three 0.7-inch 1,920 by 1,080 native D-ILA imaging chips.

The projectors were introduced by JVC America at September's CEDIA Expo. The top two models in the consumer home-theater lineup feature the company's e-Shift up-conversion technology to display 2D HD content at four times the resolution of FullHD material.

These models include a new lens memory function with three settings for storing custom focus, zoom and lens shift position.

The Procision series models include the DLA-X90R ($11,999 suggested retail) offering a 120,000:1 native contrast ratio and the DLA-X70R ($7,995) offering an 80,000:1 native contrast. Both are THX certified.

Using the e-Shift technology, 2D HD content is up-converted and scaled to a 4K signal (3,840 by 2,160), and the e-Shift technology displays it at full 4K precision, JVC said.

In the two top models a combined 16-step lens and lamp aperture adjustment allow the user to optimize the f-number (relative aperture) of the optics system in all steps.

JVC is including two pairs of active-shutter 3D glasses and three-year warranties with the top-of-the-line 4K projectors.

Rounding out the trio is the DLA-X30 ($3,499), which will also present 3D images but omits the e-Shift system. It offers a 50,000:1 native contrast ratio and comes with a two-year warranty.

El Segundo, Calif. - TiVo officially announced Tuesday that its long-awaited return with a TiVo DVR for DirecTV subscribers will begin to roll out in select markets Dec. 8.

TiVo will begin offering its service and interface to select DirecTV subscribers in leading markets, including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, New York, Denver, San Francisco, Sacramento, Philadelphia, Seattle and Washington.

TheTiVo HD DVR from DirecTV will be made widely available to all DirecTV customers nationwide beginning in early 2012, according to a TiVo statement.

"We are excited to bring the TiVo product DirecTV customers know, love, and want to get their hands on again," TiVo said in an official statement announcing the release this week. "The TiVo HD DVR from DirecTV will incorporate TiVo's Classic User Interface, including its signature Swivel Search, TiVo Suggestions, WishList Recordings and Season Pass features, which help users find and schedule recordings of the programming they want, when they want it."

TheTiVo HD DVR (model THR22) for DirecTV will carry a $199 retail price and subscribers will have to pay an additional $12 per month for DVR service - this is comprised of a $7 per month charge for the DirecTV DVR service fee and a $5 per month fee for TiVo's user interface and recording options.

DirecTV's first DVRs produced in 1999 used the TiVo platform, but after DirecTV was acquired by News Corp., the satellite TV provider opted to shift its DVR allegiance to another News Corp.-owned technology developer, NDS, which also made the conditional access security for the DirecTV platform.

TiVo DVRs were phased out over five years after that, leaving many DirecTV and TiVo loyalists disappointed.

After News Corp. sold off its holdings in DirecTV, the company announced in 2008 that it was re-opening the gates to a TiVo DirecTV DVR in 2009, but the launch was postponed three times, before its final release this week.

While the newTiVo DirecTV DVR does feature the company's familiar, "Classic" user-friendly guide, menu system and search functions, it will not offer the newer TiVo Premiere User Interface that combines DirecTV programming with content available through third party online services.

A spec sheet indicates it also does not offer support for 3D, TV apps orDirecTV's whole-home DVR service capability. It will support up to 1080p HD resolution, however.

It will, however, store up to 100 hours of HD programming or up to 400 hours of SD programming at a time.
I am wondering what you think would be a better buy: the Yamaha Aventage RX-A1000 or Denon AVR3310CI. Currently, I have a two really phenomenal deals on these two receivers and am having trouble deciding which one to go with - both almost identical in price. This will be an all purpose amp: frequently being used for music listening, movie watching, internet radio, etc. I would really appreciate your input.

Sony Promises “Different” Kind Of Tv

Sony is planning a type of TV set which is going to be very different from its current offerings, apparently.

How so? Well CEO Howard Stringer didn’t make that clear when he talked to the Wall Street Journal over breakfast, but he did say that TV manufacturers were currently engaged in a cut-throat market.

And that new TV technology was something whichSony had in the pipeline to differentiate itself from the current all too similar range of offerings across the board.

Stringer said: “There’s a tremendous amount of R&D going into a different kind of TV set”, refusing to get drawn into any discussion on exactly what that may be.

Although he did give a hint when he gave a nod to Apple and the late Steve Jobs, who was determined to find a way to revolutionise TV viewing.

“That’s what we’re all looking for,” he added. “We can’t continue selling TV sets [the way we have been]. Every TV set we all make loses money.”

Which is why Sony has been in such a hole regarding its profits of late, or the major reason, due to the need to cut prices or risk cheaper priced rivals driving down its TV sales.

The mention of Apple is interesting, as some sources such as the Register have speculated that perhaps the Cupertino company is looking at some sort of voice controlled television using Siri developed tech.

PerhapsSony has a similar idea in mind, although a voice controlled EPG and recording system could prove a handful to implement successfully.

What Stringer clearly wants to do is unify Sony’s consumer tech, from the PlayStation through its new tablets, laptops, smartphones (now Ericsson is to be bought out) and TVs to make an overall experience which encourages consumers to stick with the brand across all electronic devices.

Much like Microsoft is doing with Windows 8, tablets, smartphones and Xbox Live.

It’s a shame he couldn’t have dropped more of a hint about exactly what is in the R&D works regarding this specific new set, but we guess the fact that it’s now being talked about means an announcement isn’t that far off. Perhaps at CES in January?

Bib - Neod Vs Ferrite

Hey everybody! It's been a while since I have been here and over at SSA. I'm liking the changes!

Alright, on to my question. Is there a distinct advantage to using a neodymium speaker when a nearly identical ferrite speaker is also available? Ruling out cost and weight, of course. I want to make another set of BIBs but with 5" speakers. (I just made a set using Tang Band W3-1053SC's and I love them).

I am looking at using either of these speakers:

http://www.parts-exp...264-918&scqty=1

http://www.parts-exp...tNumber=264-898

The speakers have an identical line length and will use very similar cabinets so where is the advantage? I have never listened to or used speakers that use NeoD magnets so I am without a reference to fall back on but from what I have researched there is no sound quality difference.

If anybody can help me out with this, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Here is a crappy Droid pic of the BIB setup I just made:

Long Beach, Calif. - Changing with the times, Epson America introduced this week its latest pair of portable, combo 3LCD projectors that swap a built-in DVD from past approaches for an iPod/iPhone/iPad dock.

Shipping now, the MegaPlex MG-850HD ($799 suggested retail) and MegaPlex MG-50 ($699) are both bright portable projectors, featuring stereo speakers with iPod, iPhone and iPad docks.

MegaPlex MG-850HD offers720p HD resolution while the MegaPlex MG-50 offers 540p images.

Both can be used to watch movies, view presentations, share photos or enjoy content saved on portable devices.

"MegaPlex is the ideal big-screen projector for the new digital lifestyle. Enabling consumers to share multimedia content from their iPod, iPhone, iPad and a wide assortment of other digital devices, MegaPlex is changing the way movies, gaming, slideshows, presentations, music and more are viewed by eliminating the confinement of a smaller screen," said Jason Palmer, Epson America product manager. "With the high-quality, versatility and portability of Epson's MegaPlex solutions, consumers can literally dock their iPad, iPhone or iPod, click, and immediately share multimedia content on a big screen wherever they may be."

The MG-850HD outputs 2,800 lumens of brightness while the MG-50 boasts a level of 2,200 lumens.

In addition to the 10-watt stereo speakers, the projectors add a microphone input so users can provide narration to photos and business slideshows.

Both models also feature USB plug-and-play setup, and HDMI and VGA inputs.

Vizio Begins National Passive 3Dtv Rollout

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 11/16/2011

Irvine, Calif. - Vizio said Tuesday it recently ramped up distribution of its much-hyped, passive glasses M-Series 3D LCD TV line to dealers across the country.

Select screen sizes in the series have been available in recent months at select dealers and regions, but the company said most models are now available everywhere.

The passive-glasses 3D technology uses low-cost unpowered 3D glasses, unlike most rival 3D sets that use more expensive battery powered active-shutter glasses.

The Full HD 1080p M-Series line includes the 42- ($1,040 suggested retail), 46- ($1,260), and 55- ($1,650) screen sizes. A 65-inch ($2,100) version will start shipping in Jaunary 2012, the company said.

All use the company's "Edge Lit Razor LED" backlighting technology.

Vizio claims the LED system produces a brighter picture needed for optimal 3D effects.

The technology is also said to produce a wider horizontal viewing angle and improved fast motion pictures.

All M-Series models also include Vizio Internet Apps (V.I.A.) technology and built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity.

The company offers a premium Bluetooth QWERTY remote to navigate the connected platform for services including Amazon Instant Video, Blockbuster on Demand, Facebook, Fandango, Flickr, Hulu Plus, Netflix, Pandora, Rhapsody, Twitter and VUDU.

Audio Help - Pc To Reciever To Tv

I have been mulling around how to improve my setup.

What I want to happen:

Download my movies in blueray format or 1080p HD and I bring up my TV and put VLC on that "monitor" and select the input on my reciever and have 5.1 surround sound.

Currently:

I do the above BUT I pull the PC speakers from the front headphone jack and that automatically switches the output to the rear headphone jack and select the input on the reciever. More mechanical and isn't that great of quality going over a normal headphone jack.

So first the PC:

Custom Windows 7 with a P55 sli moboard (using onboard audio) and two nvidia 9800GTX+'s. I have heard I can set up the audio on the moboard to go out to the video cards and go over the hdmi dvi cable but then I wouldn't be able to use the PC speakers without going into the computer....as far as I know. Moboard has (SEE PIC)

Lastly the Reciever:

Sony digital audio video control center str-k740p (see pic)

Thanks guys!

Need Better Amp For Awesome Speakers

Last year I got this amazing an amazing set of Paradigm Studio 100s plus a Paradigm powered sub to go with them. Currently I am powering them with a pathetic little Harman Kardon A/V receiver. The HK really sounds great when the volume dial is at about 8:00 - sweet, fat, musical, and not very loud. I have to crank the dial up near 12:00 to get a decent volume out of the S100s and when the HK gets that loud the sound really goes to pot. Feels like I have a Ferrari powered with a Volkswagen engine! I know there's all sorts of fabulous amps out there, but I broke the bank (for about the next five years) when I bought the speakers. I'm looking in the sub $1000 range. Anyone have suggestions? I found a used ADCOM GFA-5500 for about $500 which I am considering. ADCOM seems to be hated by a lot of purists, though admired as an audiophile brand by those who typically purchase Pioneer or Sony. Anyone have opinions about the ADCOM or suggestions for other amps to consider?

Continuously Playing Audio File - How To?

I have an older Pioneer receiver (SX-2300) and would like to connect a music source that will continuously play an mp3 file. The file is running water and nature sounds and would provide some mellow background noise in a busy neighborhood. My question: what piece of equipment should I get (iPod, CD player …) to continuously play this file? Thanks! Bill

Picked Up Some New Speakers Today! (By New I Mean Used)

I picked up a pair of Tannoy i8s. Pulled these out of somewhere we did an install. Some cool little speakers. They are an 8" Coaxial style speaker. Kind of like an old Altec duplex design I guess.

They sound pretty good when paired with my sub. Only problem is that My receiver crosses the Tannoys too high when the sub output is on. I need an Integra remote to do some on screen changes with the receiver...

The cabinets are kind of an ugly color, but I am planning on pulling the grilles off and backing them with some grille cloth, and painting the cabinets black to match the grilles. Don't know if I should do a gloss or a flat? My TV stand is a gloss black. hmmm decisions decisions.

Anyways here's some pictures.
