Trying to get some things going here and since I am always taking quick snapshots at work and elsewhere, I'll post some pictures from my phone of things I have been working on, or worked on, or just cool thing I get to see.

First off, old Philco radio our tech refurbished. Went through all the electrical and refinished the exterior. Really cool old piece. You can tune in short wave radio signals too which I thought was neat. Built in record player. The customer who brought it in is excited to have this thing restored.

Basic Home Audio Help Needed

Hello. So glad to have found this forum and am sure I can get some help here!

I just moved into a home that has 2 sets of speakers mounted into the ceiling. One set is in the living room and one set is in the backyard. All 4 speakers have cables running into the basement. In the basement, each of the cables has 4 separate wires inside of them. So, for the 4 speakers, there is a total of 2 cables with 4 wires each.

I basically just want to set up a simple system to be able to play music through these speakers and was recommended the Sonos system. However, when I looked at the Sonos Connect:Amp online, it looked like there were only slots for 4 separate wires and I have 8. What should I do? Do I need some sort of amp or receiver? Why are there 4 wires per cable?

Also, will the sonos system allow me to control the living room speakers and the backyard speakers separately?

I'm pretty clueless about all of this, so the simpler the explanations the better.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Receiver Trouble

Good evening everyone.

I am new to the forum and hope to spend some quality time here. I am hoping I am posting this question in the right spot, as I did not see a better place for this. If I need to be redirected, someone please let me know. Anyway, I have had this old A/V receiver since it was new. It is an Optimus STAV 3450. Radioshack as I am sure you all know. I bought it about 17 years ago, and has been an awesome peice of equipment. Has always worked. Never a problem. Then recently, I upgraded my tv and decided to retire the old home theater system for a new Yamaha set up. I retired the unit to the garage to use with my Ipod for those occasions I am tinkering with my Jeep. One month after putting this set up outside, it failed. When it was working properly, I would press the power button, wait 5 seconds until I heard another click (have no idea what that is), and then I was off to the races. Well that click came one day with a longer delay than 5 sec. It eventually came on and I was able to listen to my Ipod. After about 10 minutes, I heard a loud pop from the receiver, and then no sound. It powers up, display and all, but the clicking sound I am used to hearing after it powers up is gone. Can someone explain to me what that click does after you activate the power button. I am assuming this will be an inexpensive fix. By no means is this receiver ready for the trash. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Transmitting Wireless Audio

I have my flatscreen TV set up to act as a computer monitor for my PC. However, to send the audio signal to the TV, I have to run cables across the floor, which is both unsightly and a trip-hazard. Are there any wireless audio transmitters available that feature two 3.5mm male connections for communication between my two devices? All I can find are Bluetooth transmitters, which my TV is not compatible with.

At Home Speaker Problem

I just started renting a room, and im trying to decide what to do about the sound system type stuff in my room. I have a macbook pro, my ipod, my phone, and a crappy tv. The reason i say crappy tv is becuase the speakers in it blow. I am trying to find out the best way to get decent sound of out all my devices, and it seems like a bluetooth speaker was the best option i could find. But i dont have alot of experience in this, thats why im here. I dont actually have cable, so the tv is strictly being used for my computer at this point. With a bluetooth speaker like the bose soundlink or jawbone jambox i could hookup both my laptop and ipod and phone, and it would be small, compact and easy to use. The other benefit is i dont want a bunch of wires going around cause the room is kinda small and it would make it look cluttered. The problem is i keep seeing that bluetooth devices will never have sound as good as a wired speaker, so im wondering if theres any idea i havent thought about as to hooking up the above devices, mainly ipod and computer, to decent speakers. I dont wanna buy regular speakers that need an amp and a whole sound system because it just seems like too much stuff, and im also on a budget. Does anyone here think the ease of use of the bluetooth system i was referring to would not outweigh whatever drop in sound quality there is? I have no first hand experience with these bluetooth speakers, but i know crappy sound when i hear it.

If I was to create criteria for soundbar performance, what would I want to focus on? I'm assuming power output is important. How about digital/analog conversion? What makes one soundbar perform better than another? I really appreciate your help with this!

Surround Receiver Sub $1000

What does anyone/everyone think of this? I'm thinking of selling off my Harman Kardon HK990 and delving into multi-channel audio. I have looking at the Anthem MRX500 at the local shop but it's so pricey. Wondering if anyone has any advice on something with processing that is as good (or nearly) but doesn't cost $1500 cuz I'm not sure I'm gonna come up with that much. Features I want ...

-HDMI switching
-5.1 channel
-internet radio (this is not a MUST but would be nice)
-great sound (I have an amazing set of main speakers and don't want to downgrade the sound I'm getting, just want to be able to do multichannel)

Any ideas?

Best Speaker System

Here is what I am looking for for my home audio system and am wondering the best/most economical system

1)Multi-speaker capability (in 2 rooms for now)
2) Can play wirelessly from ipad/iphone without macbook being on/open
3) Will stream apps such as Spotify, iheart radio, pandora in addition to itunes library
4)Will work with Airport Express

I have heard conflicting information re:weather or not Airplay will play on multiple speakers, weather or not Airplay will play from iphone/ipad while computer is off, weather or not Airplay plays Spotify, etc.

I had purchased a Sonos but want to return it because it does not support 1)Airport Express with multiple speakers 2)itunes library playing directly from ipad/iphone without computer on. It ended up pricey $525 for one speaker because I had to purchase an Airport Extreme and a bridge in addition to the speaker and it still does not play my itunes library from the ipad/iphone without the computer on. I do like that it has multispeaker capability though and plays all music apps through the speaker from the iphone/ipad--just not itunes without me purchasing a NAS/Airport Extreme.

I am looking at Airplay Speakers such as the Philips Fidelio and iHome w1. My concern is that it won't play itunes/spotify/pandora on my ipad/iphone to multiple speakers while my macbook is off. I am not looking for bluetooth speakers, but speakers connected to wifi.

Is there a solution to this?

Which Pair Of Speakers Do I Use For My Fronts?

OK here is my situation I would love advice on. I just moved so looking to start fresh for my 5.1 system. So I have three sets of speakers 1) Polk Audio TR25i 2) Infinity IL10 3) Infinity Entra One. I was using a come in box satellite 5.1 system from polk but now want to use full size speakers so gave that to my parents. My room is a mid size room nothing small but not large. Which do people prefer for my fronts is my main question???? I will probable get rid of one set so which out of the 3 pairs should get left out of my system. Already have a sub and will match a center depending on my fronts. Thanks again!!!!

Getting My Tunes (Some Hi Def) To My Receiver

Hi,

I have a new Yamaha receiver with some very nice b-b DACs that i'd like to utilize. unfortunately, the nearest computer doesn't have the best audio card on it. the one with the good echo soundcard is too far away from the recevier.

i have an old laptop, or a desktop that are within 15 feet of the receiver, so i want to get a clean digital signal to the receiver from that distance. i don't want an outboard DAC. i like the burr browns currently in the Yamaha.

what options do i have? is there a pcmcia to hdmi output that might work? it owuld be nice to also get video to the receiver, but audio is the main concern. and i do have some 24/96 flac files i can output through foobar that i'd like to get into the receiver as well.

what are my best (and somewhat economical) options?

thanks
ps, the receiver i have doesn't come with the ethernet input. the one above it did, but i got the lower model instead.

Car Audio Used As Home Audio

I have a question that i have been researching for a really long time. ok I have 5 12" subs that I have aquired over time. 2 subs in a single box, 2 more subs in another box and a single in its own box. I have a Kenwood Amp 4 ohm @ 1800 watt max. the two dual boxes are both wired in an 8 ohm configuration connected to my amp in just one side which makes it 4 ohm. the single sub that i have is wired in a 4 ohm configuration and connected to the other terminals in my amp.
I have a Kenwood audio deck that has my amp hooked up to it. The Deck has a total of 6 RCA slots 2 for subs, 2 for front speakers, and 2 for rear speakers. The front and rear ports are connected to my surround sound receiver and everything works wonders except for one thing.

I know how to do all the wiring and I'm learning more and more about resistances, and now i need to know about amperes.

I have the amp and deck hooked up to 4 power supplies all wired in parallel, however the problem is when i turn it up to a loud volume the Deck restarts. I figured out why, the problem is it isn't getting enough power. I dont want to just keep adding power supplies because well I'm loosing outlets in my power strip and i don't really like looking at them in the first place.

Now all this brings me to my question what do i need to make it so it stops cutting out, it goes pretty loud but ive had this system wired into my car and well it can go way louder. (the reason it isn't in my car is there is a better system in there now and i just didnt want all this to go to waste). I know it needs more amperes but I don't know how many or what I need to get or even if that is the real problem I have.

What I've found from researching a little bit is that this might solve my problem but I want a second opinion before I spend $100+
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002BA58O/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A1DXN92KCKEQV4
More power? less? or not the right product at all?

I know a lot of people say just sell what you have and buy a home audio sub amd you can get more out of it but this is more of a learning experience, and I just get bored and like to try different things out. Plus i'm using the 12v source to power a LOT of LEDs running throughout my room, and I don't want to get rid of them. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Unlimited Funds... Dont Know What To Get

Hi everyone, first time poster so go easy on me.
I grew up listening to music on a pair of Klipschorns and a Carver amp. Was my dads setup. Unfortunately, I'm not technical enough to tell you model #'s or much else, all I know is I loved that stereo. Im moving into a new house and would like to set up the perfect home stereo. My father passed a few months ago and its kind of in his honor. Recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Large 2 story house (no basement) with 4 bedrooms and large garage... Also has close neighbors that look like the kind of neighbors that would call the cops on you for loud music. Something I grew up with, but am trying to avoid now. As far as sound proofing and sound optimization, would the garage be the best way to go or one of the bedrooms or livingrooms? Other than the master, the bedrooms are maybe 12 to 14ft and pretty much square. The garage is somewhere around 25 ft by 10ft on the longest side. the garage is like an L

I really want Klipschorns again, either 2 or 4, but am open to suggestions if someone thinks theres better out there. What kind of amp do I need to power these speakers?

I'm willing to spend 15-20k, so i feel like that should get me the best stereo anyones ever seen, but maybe im wrong

I like mostly rock, specifically classic rock, at extremely loud, clean levels.

I walked into my local audio store and had him write me up a quote on a pair of klipschorns, a carver 1600 watt amp, THX select2 plus 7.2 av receiver ( I think the brand started with an I but it wasnt insignia ), a BBE sonic maximizer and an apple brand transport ipod dock and it was about $10,800. Am i looking good here? Is this going to be the dream home stereo? Is this what you would get if you were going to buy your dream stereo? Thanks for reading

Pyle Pro Pta1000, Two Truth 2030P, And A Sub?

Hey everyone,
Sorry if this is a totally newbie question but I am in fact new to all this home audio stuff. Anyways, I bought two Behringer Truth 2030p's a little bit ago and I already have a 12" Sub. I was wondering what would be a good amp to power a setup like this. Would I need a different amp for the speakers and the sub?

The reason I ask about the Pyle Pro pta1000 is because my friend has one he is willing to sell me for cheap, and I was wondering if I could use that to power the speakers or the sub. Or both?

The sub is only 250 watts RMS, 500 peak.

The speakers are two way and can support up to 100 watts each.

Here's the stats on the amp.

Frequency response: 20Hz-20kHz

2-channel bridgeable

500 Watts x 2 Channels @ 4 Ohm

250 Watts x 2 Channels @ 8 Ohm

Thanks for the help!!

Upgraded Amp To Go With Studio 100S

OK Audiophiles, don't laugh! After checking out all the suggestions from my previous post, I had decided to go with the Emotiva XPA2 power amp. Then my sister in law (works for Harman Int'l) let me know that the company was having this ridiculous sale for employees where she could get stuff for like 25% of retail price. So I quick did some reading on their stuff, they had this new product called the HK990 that everyone was raving about. VERY expensive, but with the deep discount it actually came into my price range. So I decided to give it a try.

Amp arrived just before Christmas (yea! new toy for dad!). As with a lot of new gear, my first reaction was ... huh?!! I got it unboxed, hooked up, set it up to bypass all the EQ choices (it has a plethora, including room corrected modes), and put on Sting "Sacred Love." That's one of my benchmark CDs - Sting's best work IMO. And I was like "wow this really sounds terrible." I get so used to the way things sound I have a hard time adjusting. When my ears finally got adjusted and I found the right EQ settings - WOW! Clarity is just UNBELIEVABLE.

I also ended up buying the HK 990 CD player that goes with it. It has this thing called HRS link which runs over what looks like an ethernet cable. It runs a digital signal to the amp and somehow syncs the clock in the CD player with the one in the amp. Not sure how all that works but it does produce an increase in sound quality over analog RCA connections.

So now I have this really amazing 2-channel setup. And it's great but I have to confess I'm not entirely satisfied. One of the reasons I decided to buy this amp is that with my deep discount I could turn around and eBay it for twice what I paid for it. So i'm thinking about doing that and getting a nice AV receiver. Have been in the local shop drooling over the Anthem MRX500 - anyone have any experience with that?

It really does sound incredible. But like a typical enthusiast enough is never enough.

Surround Sound Problems.

Okay I didn't know quite where to get help with this so I thought I might come here first.

I recently purchased a new Sony receiver (Model: STR-DH820) and a new samsung blu-ray Player (Model: BD-D5500).

The Blu-ray player is capable of putting out DTS-HD and Dolby HD, as well as my sony receiver is capable decoding both.

The connections are HDMI from Blu-ray to Receiver and HDMI from Receiver to television. I have 7.1 speakers.

For whatever reason the sony receiver is not decoding the DTS-HD or Dolby HD, its only seems to be getting it as PCM.

I selected Bitstream (Unprocessed) in the audio settings for the blu-ray player (which is what it recommends that you do if your receiver is capable of outputing it)

yet it still isnt saying it on the receiver.

Since I don't know too much yet, I don't spend that much. So what will follow, is the different equipment I've acquired over the past couple years that I think is worth looking at. Most of it is at least 10 years old. Some of it is 30 years old. I mostly listen to music by the way; not much of a movie fan.

Advice On The Right Receiver

I am renting a house. It has two ads bookshelf speakers in the great room (i know, not ideal, but they should be ok). I own a Pioneer Pro Plasma display (no speakers). I'd like to be able to hook the speakers up and use them for my tv audio, dvd audio, and stream music from my mac (itunes, spotify, etc.). I don't really have any need right now for surround sound, but would appreciate some pointers. I'm looking for the least expensive but reasonable solution since I don't own the house, just need something functional now. Don't feel like dropping 600 or so on a receiver, which the guys at best buy of course want me to do. Thoughts? Thanks.

Hello, New Member Checking In.

Wanted to say hello and possibly get a question answered.

I have a whole house audio system consisting of the following:

1 - 70" standard audio rack
- 3 Crown CTS600 amplifiers (2 bridged driving the 29av's)
- 1 Crown CT600 Amplifier (Bridged to subs)
- 1 Crown CT400 Amplifier
- 1 Crown CT200 Amplifier
- Various processors, BBE sonic maximizer 31 band eq, Monster power centers, wireless mic, ect
- JBL Soundzone source controller

This is powering an indoor/outdoor neighbor destroying fleet of JBL Control's
6 - JBL Control 29av's
12 - JBL Control 25av's
4 - JBL Control Now's
10 - JBL in ceiling speakers.

The sources for the above rack are a Harmon Kardon AVR3600/ Harmon Kardon Blueray (driving its own home theater with Energy speakers w/ipod dock. A dedicated media center CPU linked via WiFi to an HP Touchpad for wireless control of all controls. of music selection

Its a great system that will plaster the curtains to the windows but I want to add some finer zone by zone controls. Currently I use the JBL zone controller at the rack to select inputs (1 of 3) in each of the two different zones (inside and outside). Sitting by the pool punching up music on a touchpad over wifi that controls the house COOL....walking across the whole house and flipping a switch to change the source in one zone or adjust one zones volume....Buzzkiller.

Everything I see for room by room controlers have the pads that have built in amplifiers for plug and play jobs. Or they are NOT user programmable systems and are overkill for what I need. I don't want to break the bank (because according to my wife I already did) but I want to put, say 4 control pads around the house that will control individual volume/source for each zone with the amplification I already have.

Basically a box with 3 line level inputs and 4 line level outputs. This should connect via cat 5 to the 4 controllers. Each control pad would have an option to select from the three sources and a volume control. Anyone know if such an animal exists? Thanks!

Can Sansui S-820U Tower Speakers Be Adapted?

My gf had an old stereo set (turntable, cassette, cd, tuner) from the 80s or 90s that hasn't worked in quite a while. I'm no expert and have very little experience in home audio. I'll spare the gory details, but I fussed with it for about a couple of hours and could only get a hum from the system.

To the thrift store it went, but I kept the speakers. I did some research on them, apparently they're are from the 70s and not worth much, but they seem to be in good condition. My question is, can these speakers be adapted for use should we decide to get a new home audio system? The speaker connections are the kind that you shove a bare wire into a clip. I have a 78 rpm collection that I'm in the process of digitizing using a vintage 70s era Dual 1219 and a DAK setup. I like to listen to my 78s as I digitize them, so I'm wondering if I can hook it up to the Sansui speakers as well as my computer speakers. Thanks in advance for your help.

Which Amplifier Is For Me?

I recently bought an MTX Audio ThunderPro2 speaker from Best Buy. My intention with this speaker was to be able to crank some loud music in my room. However, I recieved this speaker in the mail today and was very confused. Please take into consideration that I am a total ammature with speakers like this. Every speaker set I've ever owned came with an electrical cord in the back, plug into the wall and your set. So, I guess I expected the same from this speaker. Silly me. So here I am opening this speaker and I realize there is no cord. After several minutes of rifling through the cardboard and plastic, I came to a conclusion that there are NO CORDS! So i quickly jumped online with the customer service at MTX Audio and he brought to my attention that i need an amplifier. Bottom line, I have less than $100.00 to spend on this amplifier thing. My speaker has 400 watt peak power handling. Where can I get a good amplifier for under $100 to suit my needs?? Thanks to anyone who takes time to respond to this. To see more specs and get a better feel as to what I am dealing with, I will conclude this post with the link to my speaker. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/MTX+-+12%22+2-Way+Professional+Loudspeaker+(Each)+-+Black/Silver/8623563.p?id=1193451619263&skuId=8623563#tabbed-customerreviews

Help With Garage Stereo

Hey Guys, I have been trying to figure out how to put together a stereo for my garage, i have been doing a lot of researching but I'm just not getting very far so I figured I would ask the experts. I am planning on building something like this http://pjimmyaudio.weebly.com/ (I realize that thing is stupid over priced), I was planning on running car audio componets with a DC to AC converter, but I am thinking that would be a lot of unnecessary complication and probably wouldn't be very reliable. So now I am thinking of running a home stereo amp to power it instead, I am wanting to run an mp3 player so I wont need any kind of head unit or anything. I apologize in advance, I realize this is a really newb question, and has probably been covered a million times allready, but it's something I don't really understand and any help will be very appreciated. Thanks in advance

Sony And Samsung Shift To New Lcd Panel Business Alliance

Sony and Samsung Shift to New LCD Panel Business Alliance

•Samsung to acquire all of Sony's shares of S-LCD, making the joint venture its wholly-owned subsidiary
• Sony andSamsung enter into a strategic agreement for supply and purchase of LCD panels.

Tokyo, Japan - Sony Corporation ("Sony") andSamsung Electronics Co., Ltd. ("Samsung") today announced that the two companies have signed agreements to transition the current business relationship with respect to LCD panels.

Under the agreement, Samsung will acquire all of Sony's shares of S-LCD Corporation ("S-LCD"), the two companies' LCD panel manufacturing joint venture, making S-LCD a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung. In consideration for the share transfer, cash consideration of approximately KRW 1.08 trillion* will be paid to Sony by Samsung. Concurrently, the two companies have entered into a new strategic agreement for the supply and purchase of LCD panels with a goal of enhancing the competitiveness of both companies. The agreement also allows Sony and Samsung to continue cooperative engineering efforts focused on LCD panel technology.

For Sony, this transaction will enable it to monetize its shares in S-LCD and aims to secure a flexible and steady supply of LCD panels from Samsung, based on market prices and without the responsibility and costs of operating a manufacturing facility. With whole ownership of S-LCD, Samsung anticipates heightened flexibility, speed and efficiency in both panel production and business operations.

Established in April 2004, S-LCD has continued to deliver advanced and cost-competitiveLCD panels to both of its parent companies, contributing to the expansion of the respective parties' TV businesses, and the large-sized LCD TV market overall. However, LCD panel and TV market conditions have now changed. In order to respond to such challenging conditions and to strengthen their respective market competitiveness, the two companies have agreed to shift to a new LCD panel business alliance.

The share transfer and payment are targeted to close by the end of January 2012, subject to necessary approvals from regulatory authorities.

As a result of this transaction, a non-cash impairment loss of approximately JPY 66 billion is expected to be incurred by Sony in the third quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012, due to the reevaluation of its S-LCD shares. This loss includes an impact from the fluctuation of exchange rate. Despite this one-time loss, Sony estimates that the transaction will result in substantial savings on and after January 1, 2012 in respect of costs associated with its
procurement of LCD panels. The current estimate of the yearly savings in respect of such costs is approximately JPY 50 billion, compared to LCD panel procurement costs estimated for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012. Neither the one-time loss nor the estimated cost savings were included in Sony's forecast of consolidated financial results for the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2012, announced on November 2, 2011. Sony is currently reevaluating this forecast, taking into account this transaction and other factors that might affect its full year FY2011 consolidated financial results forecast.

Need Help With 6-8 Speaker Stereo Set Up For My Garage/deck

Hi I was hoping someone could guide me along with this, I don't know much about home audio. I would like to put 6 100 watt 8 inch Polk audio speakers in my drop ceiling in my garage and possibly 2 indoor/outdoor speakers on my rear deck run off of one receiver. I have an old stereo receiver and a newer Sony now but both only have outputs for 2 pairs of speakers (4 total) and I am unsure what equipment/changes I will have to make to power 6-8 speakers at one time. Best Buy suggested I look into Magnolia but I'm not sure what to look for exactly. I have seen that you can get 4 channel speaker selectors and it seems like that could work but I'm not sure if either of my current receivers could power that many speakers. I like my music at a good volume in the garage. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Need Help In Building 5.1 Surround Sound System!

Hey guys!

My house burned down in March of this year and it's finally being done rebuilding, we'll be moving in on the 21st, such a nice Christmas present! Anyways, so I need a 5.1 Surround sound system for my computer that has a good sound card with Digital Input.

This is my sound card : http://www.htomega.com/claro.html

So I've been looking and I don't want to pay for big brand names like Sony and Samsung, etc... I wanted to know your idea on more underground companies that produce as good, if not better products that these companies for a better price???

I can probably put something like 500 CAD$ Shipped or not is going to be determined depending on what you guys give me as ideas!

I currently have my eyes on this, is this any good?

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JZSYZO/sr=8-69/qid=1323896407/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1323896407&sr=8-69&seller=

The main purpose of this system is Music (Heavy Metal / Death / Melodic type of music) and also 3D sound gaming.

Thank you for your insight and I hope you guys can provide me with enough information this week so I can maybe buy it on the weekend!

Thanks again!
